Your musicality – Musical ensembles and groups

There are many music ensembles in the school ranging from small to large scale ensembles.

Chapel Choir

Chapel Choir is open to singers at an intermediate to advanced level by audition.

This is run by Mr de Voil on a Wednesday evening 6.00 – 7.00pm and also on a Friday afternoon from 4.30 – 5.15pm. The Chapel Choir perform every Sunday as part of the regular chapel services, sing concerts, and tour internationally.

Coro

Coro is run by Mr de Voil and Miss Slater on Friday from 1.40pm – 2.15pm in the Concert Room.

The choir is open to all 3rd and 4th form singers of an intermediate standard, performing in a range of styles. The emphasis is on fun and building confidence, and there are opportunities to perform in plays, concerts, carol services and school events.

Schola

Schola is run by Mr de Voil and Mr Williamson on Thursday from 8.10am – 8.40am in the Lewis Room.

The choir is open to 6th form singers of an advanced standard and the focus is to develop sight-reading and aural skills in preparation for choral and organ scholarships at university.

A Cappella Groups

The A Cappella groups are close harmony groups which are open to singers by audition only.

Mr Iles runs the A Cappella groups and these rehearse on a Thursday at 6.00pm – 6.45pm and on a Friday 5.15pm – 6.00pm in the Music school.

Symphony Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra is directed by Ms Natalia Luis-Bassa on a Monday afternoon at 4.30pm – 6.00pm with sectional rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons at 4.30pm – 5.00pm.

Pupils should be Grade 7 and above and may be auditioned. The Symphony Orchestra perform in concerts each term playing a major role in Speech Day. They also have links with the London Mozart Players.

Camerata

Camerata is a String Orchestra, open to string players of Grade 5/6 and above standard and is directed by Mrs Henwood.

They rehearse every week on Wednesday at 5 – 5.50pm in the Concert Room. The aim of Camerata is to develop player’s string orchestra technique and to give them the opportunity to perform concertos. They perform termly in major school concerts.

Concert Band

The Concert Band is open to wind, brass and percussion players of Grade 5 standard or above.

Rehearsals are every Wednesday from 5.00 – 6.00pm in the Old Gym. Their repertoire consists of symphonic, popular and jazz music. On a yearly basis, Concert Band plays for the Remembrance Ceremony to the whole school and gives several major concerts.

Bugle Corps.

Bugle Corps is run by Mr Quinlivan-Brewer at 3.15 – 4pm on Wednesday afternoons in the Wind Annexe.

This is open to trumpet players of an intermediate to advanced standard. Trumpet players train how to play all the traditional bugle calls on college bugles including the Last Post and Reveille. They perform on Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday and also at military inspections and college events and parades.

Brass Band

Brass Band is run by Mr Quinlivan-Brewer and is open to all brass players of an intermediate standard.

It takes place on Tuesday 5.15-6pm in the Old Gym.The Brass Band perform at least 3 times a year in college concerts. They have also performed in joint concerts with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Brass Band and also the Royal Academy of Music Brass Ensemble.

10 Piece Brass

10 Piece Brass is open to advanced brass players and is run by Mr Quinlivan-Brewer. It takes place on Tuesdays in the Old Gym from 6.00pm – 7.00pm.

The 10 piece have played at speech day, Cadogan Hall and also play in many other major college concerts and ceremonies such as Remembrance Day. They also take part in brass masterclasses with professors such as Lindsay Shilling (Royal College of Music), David Whitson (Royal Academy of Music) and Paul Cosh (Guildhall School of Music and Drama).

 W JO

The Wellington Jazz Orchestra is open to musicians of an advanced standard. Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays 7.30-8.30pm in Concert Room and is run by Mr Greenslade-Stanton.

Their repertoire ranges from jazz to pop and everything in between. They regularly perform public concerts on site, generally in aid of local charities and there is also a focus on studio recording.

 Singer Songwriters Lab

 (Incorporating College Couch & The Songwriters)

The place for aspiring singer-songwriters & instrumentalists, a training ground in the art of popular music. Working both in solo & collaborative settings, The College Couch & The Songwriters study and hone their craft through focused listening, studying, recording & performing.

This session is open for students who are interested in and/or starting out in performing & writing songs. Progression through this talented group can culminate in international performance and filming tour opportunities every two years.

Regular meetings take place on Thursdays 5.30-6.45pm in Music School.

Jazztet

The Jazztet is a small advanced jazz ensemble run every Wednesday 8.30-9.15pm by Mr Greenslade-Stanton.

Instrumentation changes year to year based on the specifics of the musicians interested, but always Rhythm Section with Horns, and occasional vocals as well. With a focus on Jazz Standards, through to more modern jazz influences, the ensemble also has a focus on advancing Jazz Improvisation skills.

Thursday Night Jam Session

This workshop is open to all musicians who would like to get involved including bass, percussion, vocalists, string players as well as guitarists.

It takes place on Thursday evenings in the Music School at 7.30 – 8.30pm and is run by Mr Leppard, one of our visiting guitar teachers. Stylistically covering many music genres, including blues, country, folk, and bluegrass.

Chamber Music

We have many chamber music groups which are open to musicians of a more advanced standard by invitation.

These groups include string quartets, string quintets, string trio, wind quintets, a saxophone quartet and a trombone quartet just to name a few. These happen at various times throughout the week and are based around the music school.

3rd & 4th form brass ensemble

This runs every Wednesday 1.40-2pm in wind annexe.

Cello Ensemble

An ensemble for intermediate level cellists who are not in orchestra or Camerata.

It is run by Miss Deacon every Monday 4.30 – 5.10pm in the Concert Room.

String Ensemble

An ensemble / chamber group for any string player who is not in Symphony Orchestra or Camerata.

Instrumentation will change each year, depending on musicians available. This is run by Mr Dunn 4.35 – 5.15pm in the Lewis Room.

Guitar Ensemble

This is open to classical guitarists by invitation only.

The Guitar Ensemble takes place on Fridays at 6 – 6.45pm and in the Music School and is run by our classical guitar teacher.

Clarinet Choir

Clarinet Choir rehearses at 5.30 – 6.00pm on a Tuesday in the Wind Annexe with Mr Oakes. It is open to all clarinet players of Grade 5 standard and above.

Clarinet Choir performs at various concerts here at Wellington College throughout the year.

Senior Woodwind Ensemble

The Senior Woodwind Ensemble is open to those who are more advanced woodwind players and they perform at visitor’s days and other festivals as required, for example the Festival of Education.

Mr Oakes oversees the senior woodwind ensemble in the Wind Annexe and they rehearse in the weeks before they perform. Their repertoire includes music of both a jazz and classical style.

Junior Woodwind Ensemble

The Junior Woodwind Ensemble is open to all 3rd and 4th form woodwind players of a beginner to intermediate standard.

The ensemble rehearses on Monday evenings at 7.30 – 8.00pm in the Wind Annexe and is run by Mr Oakes. Repertoire includes music of both a jazz and classical style.

The flute ensemble rehearses every week on Mondays at 4.30pm in the Wind Annexe. It is run by Mrs Burt.

Corps of Drums (Junior & Senior)

Corps of Drums are run by Mr Smith and Mr Proctor at 2.15 – 3.45pm on Wednesday afternoons in the Old Gym.

This is open to drummers of an intermediate to advanced standard. They perform on Remembrance Sunday and at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst and at the British Military Tournament at Earls Court on a yearly basis.
